Chapter Twelve

Harriet had a secret.

A big secret.

A big, big, big secret.

The biggest secret she’d ever had. She was practically burning up with the secret. This morning, two days after her tea with Leonora and Selena, she had received an invitation to attend tea with Lady Ophelia Thornton. And she hadn’t been the only lady invited. What had followed her arrival there was rather shocking.

Leeds hadn’t lied.

There really was a list of heiresses with her name on it. And there were tons and tons of wagers about those heiresses—who would marry them, how quickly they’d be married, how much money they had. However, that wasn’t even the most shocking part.

Lady Ophelia had sneaked into White’s and stolen the betting book! It had been on full display at the ladies’ tea.

Quite frankly, Harriet was in awe of Lady Ophelia. What woman dared to sneak into a gentleman’s club and steal their property with no one the wiser?

Remarkable.

The ladies had all been in uproar, of course. And while Harriet hadn’t been happy, either, she couldn’t fully commit her mind to the subject.

And whose fault was that?

As if announced, the connecting door to her chamber opened and the very culprit strode in wearing nothing but a dressing gown.

What on earth was he up to now?

At first, it started with flowers and notes. Those hadn’t stopped. They arrived every day like clockwork. It was only in the recent days, however—after she invited him for a nightcap, which turned into a sort of routine now—that her husband had been driving her hot, chaotic heating spells by flaunting his body. A few buttons undone here, sleeves rolled up there. But this was a first.

To make matters even warmer, he constantly occupied her thoughts. Night and day he commandeered them. Not even her dreams were spared!

And the sight of him tonight was no different. Harriet’s heart pounded in her chest so hard she could hear the beat, but she still managed to narrow her eyes on the man and demanded, “Is this how you show up to have a drink?”

He glanced down at his attire. “Is there something wrong with my attire? You’re in your dressing gown as well.”

“I’m still wearing a night rail.”

“Shall I go change?”

“No need,” she handed him a glass of gin, compliments of a new bottle Rohan had given her last week. “The contraband is almost gone.”

He nodded and took his spot on a leather armchair while she curled up on another one—two recent additions after their nightcaps started. Her gaze trailed over him. How many times would she need to stare at him before he became less attractive?

“How is the duke doing? I heard his chatter in the halls earlier today.”

“Annoying as ever.”

Harriet smiled. “He is like a brother to you. Of course he is annoying.”

“What of your brother? Do you get along?”

Harriet shook her head. “He is too young and busy with his studies.”

Leeds nodded but didn’t probe any further. “You can have Calstone.”

Harriet laughed. “Lord no, you keep him.” She took a sip of gin.
